Q1 @jellsmoor What is the professional path that led you to be involved in #sustainability issues related to #islandcommunities and to found @IslandsInnovate? And why did you choose to organize the 1st edition of #IFF2021? If you could summarize it… in just a few tweets! pic.twitter.com/Ax9rb27443
— Sri Event (@SriEvent) April 8, 2021
A1 I started @IslandsInnovate after seeing the opportunity to connect rural & island locations around the world working on similar development issues. It began with a newsletter and a series of virtual events and has evolved into a community of over 127,000 members.

A1 The #IslandFinanceForum aims to highlight the unique financial challenges faced by global island communities and the solutions for sustainable economic recovery and inclusive growth in a post-pandemic world.

A2 Island economies have been some of the worst affected globally by the pandemic, with key industries such as tourism being particularly hard hit. This is especially true in regions such as the Caribbean where tourism is by far the largest sector of the economy.

A2 Becoming 'sustainable islands' should be an important part of the long term recovery process. Leaders must enact policies to protect natural resources. Moving away from reliance on fossil fuel use and switching to renewable energy is also vital.

A3 While all islands are unique, there are also many similar financial recovery needs that they share. At the Island Finance Forum next week we will be covering a range of key topics that are all part of financing the sustainable development of island communities.

• Access to finance and debt restructuring
• Fintech for financial inclusionSign up for the Island Finance Forum (13th-16th April) to hear all of these topics discussed by a range of expert speakers.

Q4 @jellsmoor #Ocean health is crucial for our life but not always #oceans are at center stage in debates around #sustainability. Why? And what is most urgent and necessary to heal oceans, mainly with regard to the #climatecrisis unfortunately getting worse by the hour?#IFF2021 pic.twitter.com/oi4aOkjwzH
— Sri Event (@SriEvent) April 8, 2021
A4 There has been a failure to recognise this up until recently because the damage being done was ignored. It was believed that the ocean was a resource that would always bounce back, however much it was exploited. It has become clear that this is not the case.
(2/4) #IFF2021— James Ellsmoor 🏝 (@jellsmoor) April 8, 2021
A4 The concept provides humanity with a blueprint on how to better protect the ocean by fundamentally changing how we view it; rather than as a resource that can be destructively extracted from, it is a vital part of the global ecosystem.https://t.co/btaL3eTBrk

Q5 @jellsmoor In November #COP26 will take place. To put it simply, COP26 can't fail if we are to tackle the #climatecrisis with any hope of success. How will #islandcommunities make their voice heard at COP26? Do you have a "message in a bottle" for the world leaders? #IFF2021 pic.twitter.com/siizTTXdJr
— Sri Event (@SriEvent) April 8, 2021
A5 … the destruction of coral reefs, a higher frequency of devastating storms and more. This is why during #COP26 we plan to create an “Island Space” where we will share key insights and developments related to remote, rural and island communities.
(2/4) #IFF2021— James Ellsmoor 🏝 (@jellsmoor) April 8, 2021
A5 My message to world leaders at COP26 would be to not sideline island communities, as while they may be small in size, they hold a wealth of experience in resilience that the rest of the world can learn from. No matter the distance between us, we're all connected.
