Yes, ready to go!
— James Ellsmoor 🏝 (@jellsmoor) September 2, 2021
#VIS2021 A1 Each of these adjectives are distinct, but very much interlinked and interwoven in how they describe the direction that @IslandsInnovate aims to see islands take in the future. In turn, we believe this transition will greatly benefit global island communities. (1/5)
— James Ellsmoor 🏝 (@jellsmoor) September 2, 2021
#VIS2021 A1 Islands also need to become #sustainable. This will include a large-scale transition to #renewableenergy, changes in transportation and food production, and the creation of better jobs to prevent “brain-drain”. These will also lead to being more resilient. (3/5)
— James Ellsmoor 🏝 (@jellsmoor) September 2, 2021
#VIS2021 A1 We believe the Virtual Island Summit can play a significant part in this! https://t.co/IYXir6d2Eg #VirtualIslandSummit #SustainableDevelopment (5/5)

Q2 @jellsmoor W/in the rich programme of #VIS2021 the #SDGs appear to play a most relevant role. In your view where are we at, the world and namely the island communities, with the SDGs? Why do you consider them key but at the same time you stress the need to go even "beyond"? pic.twitter.com/SSfEr9RRx4
— Sri Event (@SriEvent) September 2, 2021
#VIS2021 A2 Even before the global #COVID19 Pandemic, the United Nations had reported that progress towards achieving the SDGs had been insufficient. The pandemic has negatively impacted progress that had been made and pushed millions back into extreme poverty. (2/4)
— James Ellsmoor 🏝 (@jellsmoor) September 2, 2021
#VIS2021 A2 The crisis has highlighted the vulnerability of so many islands and illustrates why meeting the SDGs is so vital for the prosperity of global island communities. For this reason, the SDGs play a big part in sessions and discussions at the #VirtualIslandSummit. (4/4) pic.twitter.com/wzrwqiu9ZK

#VIS2021 A3 The Virtual Island Summit (https://t.co/clCYjLOYjd) has been designed to represent a diverse and widespread group of speakers and attendees from islands across the world. Together, their voices and messages are amplified. (1/5)
— James Ellsmoor 🏝 (@jellsmoor) September 2, 2021
#VIS2021 A3 The diverse community will speak about the threat that climate change poses for islands and the urgent need to move towards a more sustainable way of living. It will give speakers from islands the opportunity to present a united voice to a global audience. (3/5)
— James Ellsmoor 🏝 (@jellsmoor) September 2, 2021
#VIS2021 A3 For example, the Pacific Island Forum, a political grouping of #Pacific islands and territories have shown a strong commitment to SDG14: "Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for #sustainabledevelopment". (5/5)
— James Ellsmoor 🏝 (@jellsmoor) September 2, 2021
Q4 @jellsmoor At #VIS2021 some sessions will address "Supporting and financing #climate and #cleanenergy projects". Is #sustainablefinance doing its part in accelerating the ecological transition? In which regions and industries is it doing well or, instead, is it failing? pic.twitter.com/sw3z0V6BL1
— Sri Event (@SriEvent) September 2, 2021
#VIS2021 A4 If only from a profit-motivated perspective, it makes economic sense for businesses to transition to more #sustainable practices, as continued global warming is predicted to seriously damage the global #economy. (2/4)
— James Ellsmoor 🏝 (@jellsmoor) September 2, 2021
#VIS2021 A4 At present levels of investment, this is unlikely to happen, though. So, unfortunately, #finance still has a long way to go in terms of investing in sustainable practices. Progress needs to be made in all areas of #business and parts of the world. (4/4)
— James Ellsmoor 🏝 (@jellsmoor) September 2, 2021
#VIS2021 A5 There are many reasons to feel pessimistic about the future, as the #climatecrisis continues to accelerate. I prefer to remain optimistic, though, and I believe that world leaders will make the necessary decisions based on the facts presented to them. (1/3)
— James Ellsmoor 🏝 (@jellsmoor) September 2, 2021
#VIS2021 A5 It is important to remember that there have been highly successful and impactful global agreements in the past, such as the 1987 ban on substances responsible for ozone depletion, signed by 197 countries. (3/3)
